Market pricing for those commodities may be too low in certain situations to justify the cost of making numerous harvest passes through the field or orchard. In certain circumstances, the inability to locate workers to harvest the crops results in the crops being allowed to perish. Finally, because fruits and vegetables ripen at different times in different parts of the world, growers may have difficulty finding buyers for their produce as the harvest period draws to a close, as wholesale buyers switch to other suppliers as better-quality produce becomes available in other parts of the world.
Food is wasted and lost mostly at later stages in the supply chain in middle and high-income nations. In contrast to the situation in developing nations, consumer behaviour has a significant role in developed countries.
