I am so sad to hear of Lizzie’s death. We met in 1978 while both working for the publisher George Braziller and remained friends for a decade. As we both lived on the Upper West Side, we often cooked together, working our way through Elizabeth David’s tomes. Lizzie was a steadfast and sensitive companion. We lost touch eventually, but I remember with pleasure our excitement about European travel (we spent time together in Paris and London), British culture, and all kinds of writing. Lizzie was an indefatigable worker and a dear friend of my youth. I was impressed but not surprised to read of her momentous achievements in recent years, given her talent. I liked knowing she was in the world, and that she had so radically transformed her life into one close to nature.

Lizzie served on the board of directors of the Society of Environmental Journalists, and it was my privilege to work with her in my capacity of associate director. It’s impossible to grasp that she isn’t still with us. Thank you for honoring her here.
