His latest book, The Golden Fortress: California’s Border War on Dust Bowl Refugees, describes the LAPD’s 1936 deployment of armed police officers to California’s statelines aimed at keeping poor domestic migrants out of the Golden State. His debut, Eve of a Hundred Midnights, recounted the true story of two journalists in love in China and the Philippines at the outset of World War II.
